Years ago we used to joke about what happened to everyone's training on deployment. You'd get the dates and the fantasy would start: no commute, no errands, nothing to move around, just work and food and sleep and a gym that's open whenever you're off. Then six or seven weeks in somebody would get hurt, spend the middle of it doing rehab and modified everything trying to get back to the shape they landed in, and go home softer than they left. It happened often enough to be a punchline.
Took me an embarrassingly long time to notice I run a smaller version of that constantly, and so does almost everyone I've trained with.
The math nobody runs
Say you add five pounds a month to a lift. Five pounds. That is nothing. That is a rounding error on a barbell and less than one bell size on the kettlebell rack.
Do that for twelve months and you're sixty pounds stronger.
Nobody does that. Not one person in a hundred adds sixty pounds to anything in a year, and the ones who do are usually beginners cashing in a one-time check they'll never get again. So the interesting question isn't whether five a month is possible in some perfect world. Obviously it isn't, forever. Bodies have ceilings, the closer you get to yours the smaller the increments get, and a fifth training year does not look like a first one.
The interesting question is why the number is so much smaller than sixty. Because it isn't the ceiling that eats it, for most of us. Almost nobody reading this is anywhere near their genetic ceiling. What eats it is that we keep going back to the start of the line.
The shape
Here's the curve I mean, and I think everybody will recognize their own year in it.
Something gets you moving. New Year's, a photo you didn't like, summer coming, a birthday with a zero in it, a buddy who talked you into something. The first couple weeks are a little rough and then it clicks, and for about a month you are getting noticeably better, week over week, in a way you can feel. The bell moves easier. Weights that were hard aren't. You feel athletic again.
So you do the thing anyone would do. You add. More sessions, more sets, heavier, longer, because it's working and motivation is high and this time you're actually going to see it through.
And then somewhere between week four and week eight it turns. Maybe you tweak something. Maybe you just get flattened. You get sick, or a work trip lands, or you go three days feeling like you're moving through mud and decide you need a break. You take a week off, which becomes two, which becomes a month. When you come back you're behind where you peaked, and the whole thing was so unsatisfying that you don't come back with much conviction.
Flat, steep, flat. It's an S. Then it resets, and you run another one, and most people get three or four of those in a year.
That's the part I want to sit on. The S curve isn't the problem. Every good training block has that shape in it. The problem is that we run the same one over and over instead of stacking them. Four S-curves in a year that each begin roughly where the last one began is a year of very real effort that produced almost nothing. You finished where you started. You have the calluses and the sore weeks and the sunk hours to prove you tried.
Why the front of the curve lies to you
Here's the part I think is genuinely under-discussed, and it's the mechanical reason the crash keeps happening.
That fast improvement in the first few weeks is mostly not new muscle. It's your nervous system getting good at the job. You're learning to fire the right things at the right time, in the right order, and to stop firing the muscles that were fighting you. You're getting better at bracing, at breathing, at timing a hip snap. On top of that your body gets quicker at the energy side of things, replenishing between sets, buffering the burn, holding a pace it couldn't hold three weeks ago.
All of that is real, and all of it arrives fast. Weeks.
The actual structural stuff is on a much slower clock. Building contractile tissue is a grind that shows up over months, and it's small increments even when everything is going right. Connective tissue is slower still. Tendons and ligaments have a worse blood supply and a slower turnover than muscle does, which means that for a stretch in there you are genuinely capable of producing more force than the ropes attaching you together have adapted to handle.
Read that last sentence again, because that's where the injuries live. It isn't that you were weak. It's that one system upgraded in three weeks and another one needs three months, and your subjective sense of "how it's going" is reading off the fast one.
The kettlebell version has an extra wrinkle. Ballistic work (swings, snatches, cleans) and grinds (presses, squats, rows) are asking for different things. Ballistics are about how fast you can produce force and about the elastic side of the system: the tendon stiffness, the bounce you catch off the backswing, the ability to turn a stretch into free output. Grinds are about tension you can hold under load. They adapt on different timelines and they fatigue you differently, so "I felt good on my swings" tells you very little about whether your presses are being run into the ground. Most people track neither and just track a feeling.
That's enough physiology. The point is only this: the thing that improves fastest is the thing you feel, and it is not the thing that has to survive the next eight weeks.
Feel is a real instrument. It's just a bad one for this.
I want to be careful, because "listen to your body" is not wrong advice. It's just wildly overrated as a primary instrument for anyone who isn't a full-time athlete.
Elite athletes have decades of reps, a coach watching them, and enough training-day repetition that their internal read is actually calibrated. Even then they have a coach precisely because the athlete's own read gets worse the more motivated they are.
The rest of us have a job, kids, a commute, inconsistent sleep, and about four to six real training hours a week to work with. We are not finely tuned instruments. Worse, our read is biased in exactly the wrong direction at exactly the wrong moment. Motivation makes everything feel better than it is. That's the whole nature of motivation. So the week you're most likely to over-reach is the week your gut is most confident you can handle it.
And the mirror problem is just as bad. You'll have days where you feel flat and awful and put up a completely normal session, because feeling flat and being flat are only loosely related.
I'm not saying ignore how you feel. Rate it, write it down, take it seriously. Just stop letting it be the only vote.
What actually tells you the truth
Three things, none of which require you to be an athlete or own anything exotic. Two of them are free.
Your resting heart rate, as a trend. Not today's number. Nobody cares about today's number. What matters is your own baseline over a couple of weeks and whether the last several days are sitting above it. A resting heart rate that's been creeping up while your training volume climbs is one of the older and more boring signals in sports science, and it's still useful because it's measuring something you cannot introspect on. Same story with heart rate variability, with the same caveat: single days are noise. Illness, alcohol, a hot bedroom, a bad night, and a genuinely hard Tuesday all look similar. Trends over days are the signal.
How your heart rate behaves during the session. The same work at a higher heart rate than usual is information. So is a slower drop between sets. If you're doing an interval you've done a dozen times and you aren't coming back down in the rest the way you normally do, that's your body telling you something before your legs do.
Your actual output. This is the one people skip, and it's the most direct of the three. Not how hard the set felt. What the bell actually did. Was rep 40 moving anything like rep 5? Did that speed hold across the whole set, or fall off a cliff in the back half? And week over week, is your output at a given weight holding steady, climbing, or quietly sliding?
That third one is the honest answer to "am I recovered," because it's downstream of everything else. Sleep, stress, nutrition, last week's volume, the argument you had on Tuesday. It all lands in what the bell does. And it's the one thing a paper log genuinely cannot see, because a notebook records that you did five sets of ten at 24kg, which is the same thing it recorded in April, and it has no idea that the last two sets were half the speed they used to be.
Three months of sessions that all felt solid isn't consistency. Sometimes it's a plateau you've made peace with. (I wrote a whole piece about that specific failure and gave it a name: hardstyle drift.)
So what does the good version look like
Boring. That's the honest answer, and it's why nobody does it.
The good version is that when things are going well, you add a little. When the signals are mixed, you hold, and holding is a real decision, not a failure to progress. And when the signals are bad, you back off on purpose, before you're forced to, which is the part everybody skips because backing off when you feel great feels insane.
That's it. That's the whole intelligent-progression thing, stripped of ceremony. Add, hold, back off, and take the planned easy week before the unplanned six-week one takes you.
The reason people don't do it isn't ignorance. Most lifters know they should deload. They don't, because backing off requires overriding a feeling with evidence, and they don't have the evidence. All they've got is a feeling, and the feeling says go.
If you get that right, you don't get sixty pounds a year. The ceiling is real and increments shrink. But you get one long line instead of four short ones that reset, and over three years the difference between those two pictures is not small. It's most of the progress you were ever going to make.
Where we come in

Out of that it makes a call. Add, hold, or back off. Planned back-offs are scheduled before you crater, not after.
None of it is a chatbot and none of it is guessing. It's rules we wrote and tuned against real training, and it will tell you to take it easy on a day you feel great, which is exactly the day you need to hear it.
There's a sensor too. It mounts on the bell and measures every rep: whether it actually finished, how fast it moved, how much you slowed down across the set. That's the output signal above, measured directly instead of inferred. It works, it's not for sale yet, and the app is a real coach without it. Watching my own numbers on it is a big part of how I ended up thinking about any of this.
Running out the clock
The part of that old joke that stuck with me was never the injury. It was the last stretch, where people had already quietly given up and were just running out the clock on something they'd meant to make count.
Most training years end that way. Not with a bang, with a shrug. Somewhere in November you look back and realize you were in better shape in March and you honestly couldn't tell me where it went.
It went into the resets. It always goes into the resets.
